Matthew Stafford becomes Lions all-time passing leader

Stafford passed Bobby Layne on the franchise’s career passing yards list Sunday against the Steelers.

Mike DiNovo-USA TODAY Sports

Matthew Stafford has become the all-time passing leader for the Detroit Lions Sunday against the Pittsburgh Steelers. Stafford hit a 79-yard touchdown to Calvin Johnson to pass Bobby Layne on the Lions' career passing yards list with 15,782.

The play was also Stafford’s 100th career touchdown pass, making him one of the quickest to that mark in NFL history.

Stafford arrived in Detroit as the first overall pick in the 2009 NFL Draft after a stellar college career at Georgia. He struggled in his rookie season, throwing 13 touchdowns and 20 interceptions in 10 games, then missed all but three games in 2010 with an injury. He experienced a breakout year in 2011, throwing 5,038 yards and 41 touchdowns.

Stafford sets the Lions’ passing mark in just his fifth season, three seasons earlier than Layne.

During his four-plus seasons in Detroit, Stafford has piled up 99 touchdowns, 61 interceptions and an overall passer rating of 87.5. He’s been a major part of the turnaround of the franchise, which went 0-16 the year prior to drafting him.

Stafford has the Lions atop the NFC North in 2013 with a 6-3 record.
