Ravens GM Ozzie Newsome taken from Soldier Field in ambulance

Newsome was taken to a local hospital after Baltimore’s loss to Chicago on Sunday with an undisclosed medical condition.

Baltimore Ravens General Manager Ozzie Newsome was taken from Soldier Field in an ambulance during the Ravens' 23-20 overtime loss to the Chicago Bears Sunday afternoon.

Newsome was driven to a local hospital, and the team later released the following statement: “Ozzie Newsome did not feel well after today’s game and a team doctor recommended that Ozzie not fly tonight.”

UPDATE: Newsome has been released from the hospital and is traveling back to Baltimore on Monday.

The 57-year-old Newsome watched the five-hour, 16-minute weather-delayed marathon from a press box. The game was delayed for nearly two hours as severe storms moved through the Chicago area.

An ambulance pulled up outside the vistor’s locker room following the Ravens’ defeat and security personel prevented stadium employees from entering the area. Newsome, a former Hall of Fame player, was taken out of a side door to avoid attention.

Nestor Aparicio of Baltimore’s WNST AM 11570, who was sitting behind Newsome in the press box, reported the GM was “sweating profusely” and “wasn’t moving well” after exiting an elevator after the game.

Newsome was hired as the Ravens’ GM in 2002, becoming the first African American to hold such a position in the NFL.
