Cecil Shorts is ‘very disappointed’ with lack of targets

Shorts was targeted just one time in the first three quarters of the Jaguars’ Week 11 loss to the Arizona Cardinals.

Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

Jacksonville Jaguars wide receiver Cecil Shorts III leads the team in receptions and receiving yards, but finished with just two receptions for 22 yards in a loss to the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday afternoon and he wasn't happy about it.

“I’m very disappointed; very disappointed in that ... very, very, very, very disappointed in that,” Shorts told Ryan O’Halloran of the Florida Times-Union. “To have one target until seven minutes left in the fourth quarter? One target. That’s [bleeping] dumb. That’s dumb, period.”

On Monday, Jaguars head coach Gus Bradley told reporters he wasn’t concerned with Shorts’ comments because they weren’t directed at anyone in particular, although he hopes public complaints don’t become a habit.

While Shorts wasn’t willing to put the specific blame on playcalling or the play of quarterback Chad Henne, Alfie Crow of SB Nation’s Big Cat Country was:

While Shorts can voice his frustration with the coaching staff, there isn’t much they can do because ultimately it’s Chad Henne who’s deciding who’s targeted when the ball is snapped. That’s where the bigger issue lies, because Henne is so apt to check the ball down, despite the misnomer that he likes to throw the ball down the field.

Through 10 games in 2013, Shorts has accumulated 50 receptions for 629 yards and one touchdown. If he manages to eclipse 1,000 yards, he would be the first Jaguars receiver to do so since Jimmy Smith finished the 2005 season with 1,023 yards.
