Mike Iupati injury: 49ers guard has sprained MCL

Iupati suffered a left knee injury on Sunday and will likely miss some time for the 49ers.

Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

San Francisco 49ers offensive lineman Mike Iupati was carted to the locker room on Sunday after he suffered a sprained MCL in a loss to the New Orleans Saints, according to Matthew Barrows of The Sacramento Bee.

Iupati, 26, left the game in the third quarter on Sunday after running back Frank Gore ran into the back of his left knee. He was replaced in the lineup by Adam Snyder, who is likely to fill Iupati's starting role in a Monday Night Football matchup against the Washington Redskins.

With Iupati expected to miss some time, David Fucillo of SB Nation’s 49ers blog, Niners Nation, listed two other players that could see increased play time:

Daniel Kilgore can also play inside, but Snyder came on at left guard when Iupati went down. We’ll get a better idea of this when the 49ers return to practice later in the week.

The 49ers also have Joe Looney on the roster, although he has been active all season. If Iupati is inactive this week, I would hope Looney would get activated. We’ll see.

A first-round selection in the 2010 NFL Draft, Iupati has been a solid starter for the 49ers in all four seasons at left guard, although he is having the most inconsistent season of his career in 2013, according to Pro Football Focus. Snyder, a third round selection in the 2005 NFL Draft, has made 83 career starts, including 14 with the Arizona Cardinals in 2012.
