Broncos vs. Patriots 2013 odds and lines: New England home underdogs for first time since 2005

It’s not often the Patriots are home underdogs, but they will be this week against the Broncos.

Jim Rogash

The New England Patriots are one of the top teams in the AFC and are a perfect 5-0 at home this season, but neither of those factors kept them from being a home underdog this weekend. The Patriots will host the Denver Broncos, who are favored by 2.5 points in the opening line, according to OddsShark.com.

The line snaps a streak of 65 straight games the Patriots were favored at home, according to Chris Chase of USA Today. New England hasn't been a home underdog since it was a 3-point underdog against the Indianapolis Colts in 2005. Not only are the Patriots usually favored at home, they've been double-digit favorites 29 times in their last 65 home games.

Some oddsmakers have since reduced the line, showing Denver favored by one point. The line could continue to move, especially with the status of a couple of players up in the air. Denver has plenty of offensive weapons, but the line could be influenced if Wes Welker is ruled out due to a concussion.

Oddsmakers are expecting a high-scoring game with the total set at 55.5 points. Even with the high total, the over may be the better bet. The total has gone over in nine of Denver’s last 11 games and four of the Broncos last five games on the road.

New England is just 5-5 against the spread this season, but 4-1 ATS at home. Denver is 2-2 ATS on the road and 6-4 overall.
