Kyle Williams injury: Former 49ers WR out for the season with torn ACL

Kyle Williams is out for the season with a torn ACL, marking the second straight season-ending injury for the former 49ers wide receiver and return man.

Kyle Terada-USA TODAY Sports

Kyle Williams will miss the rest of the 2013 season with a torn ACL, he announced via Twitter on Friday. His season ends after just 10 games. He played for the San Francisco 49ers for the first nine before being waived, then was signed by the Kansas City Chiefs prior to last week's game against the Denver Broncos. Williams' 2012 season also ended in November due to a torn ACL.

Williams did not reveal how he sustained his most recent injury.

Williams was the 49ers' No. 2 wide receiver for most of the season with Michael Crabtree and Mario Manningham nursing injuries. He was also the team's punt returner. However, Manningham recently returned to the Niners from a knee injury and running back LaMichael James took over kick return duties, making Williams expendable.

The four-year veteran had 12 receptions for 113 yards this season before being sidelined permanently. He did not record a reception during his brief stint with the Chiefs. Last Sunday, Williams appeared on four plays as a special teamer.

Williams will presumably head to injured reserve. There is no word yet whether the Chiefs have made a corresponding roster move.
