NFL news: NFL suspends Roy Ellison, 49ers extend Tramaine Brock

The NFL suspended a referee for comments made to a player, while one of the league’s top young cornerbacks signed a contract extension.

Roy Ellison, an umpire who allegedly made profane comments during a game, was suspended one week by the NFL on Friday. The NFL Referees Association is challenging the suspension, but it’s unlikely there will be a hearing before Sunday’s games.

Washington left tackle Trent Williams accused Ellison of making profane comments, including calling Williams a "garbage a** disrespectful motherf*****." In filing a grievance against the NFL, the NFLRA called Ellison a highly respected veteran. It didn't deny Ellison made the comments, but instead criticized the NFL for a double standard. The NFLRA said the league has created a "culture where players, coaches and teams can use racial slurs and profanity toward each other and at officials."

The NFLRA also accused Williams of making profane comments at Ellison. Williams denied the claim that he used a racial slur.

49ers, Tramaine Brock agree to contract extension

San Francisco signed corner Tramaine Brock to a four-year extension on Friday. The deal was worth $16 million, including $7 million guaranteed. The 25-year-old Brock has risen from an undrafted free agent to become one of the up-and-coming cornerbacks in the NFL. He's played mostly a reserve role, but recently moved into the starting lineup for the first time.

Brock beat out Nnamdi Asomugha for the No. 3 cornerback job during the season after suffering an injury during training camp. He's having a career year, and has intercepted four passes. With starter Carlos Rogers now 32, Brock could be a future starter for the 49ers opposite Tarell Brown.

David Fucillo of Niners Nation called the move “the first step toward securing (San Francisco’s) secondary of the future.”

Roddy White expected to sign an extension

Roddy White still has one year remaining on his contract, but the wide receiver is expected to sign an extension that will keep him in Atlanta for the foreseeable future. The 32-year-old is having a down season while battling multiple injuries. He's played his entire career with the Falcons.

An extension would keep White in Atlanta, but could also give the Falcons some salary cap relief. White is scheduled to count $6.3 million against the salary cap next season and an extension could reduce that cap number. That makes the potential move a win-win for the Falcons, according to Jeanna Thomas of The Falcoholic:

With significant needs along the offensive and defensive lines in particular, freeing up more cap space while securing White’s future with the franchise would be a beneficial for the Falcons.

Randall Cobb’s return still uncertain

Green Bay wide receiver Randall Cobb continues to rehab his broken leg and there is currently no timetable for his return. Initial reports said Cobb could miss six to eight weeks. That would make it possible for Cobb to return in mid-December and while he said that is possible, he said it's not a target date.

“I can’t make that call right now,” Cobb said when asked if he is certain he will play again this season. “Right now, today, I cannot play. I’m doing everything I can. I’m working my butt off in the rehab process. This is something that it needs time. It’s getting better. There’s still no timeline on when I can come back.”

Acme Packing Company has more on Cobb’s potential return, circling Week 15 as a hopeful possibility.
