Cowboys vs. Giants 2013: Ugly game leads to strong reactions

The NFC East is still up for grabs, but perhaps it’s time for New York to embrace its struggles.

The NFC East playoff picture remains unclear. Dallas took control of the division with their win over New York, but the Giants remain in the hunt two games behind the Cowboys and Eagles. Week 12 was important for bragging rights, but both sides acknowledge it was an ugly game.

Dallas didn’t look like an elite team on Sunday, but it didn’t need to. Blogging the Boys see a victory and a victory, regardless of how it happened. There’s a measure of concern too, as fans wait to see if the Cowboys can put some wins together or regress to the mean -- something that’s happened far too many times in the past.

While the finished product wasn’t anything I want to see replayed anytime soon, I did see some significant positive signs. Now it remains to be seen if the Cowboys will build on that, or will they regress to what we have witnessed far to frequently? Only time will tell. The one thing I know for certain is that the gums that were flapping through the week were silenced on Sunday evening. There are no style points in the NFL, all wins count the same, and I will be satisfied by what the Cowboys gave us.

Feelings in New York aren’t quite so positive. The Giants have a mathematical chance to make the playoffs, but the reality is far less rosy. Big Blue View is wondering whether the team embraces its misfortune in 2013 and channels it into evaluating the team’s young talent.

I know many of you will call for younger players like Damontre Moore and Adrien Robinson to see playing time over the next five weeks. It will be very interesting to see how that plays out. The Giants need to face reality and make sure the young players they will count on in 2014 get some experience the rest of the way.

Nobody expected New York to be this bad, and owning one’s place can be difficult. It’s hard to argue with his view, as evaluation should take precedent over floundering and trying to compete against the probable.
