Following reports they could be interested in bringing him back, the Seahawks and free agent Antoine Winfield are now engaged in discussions about a possible return, according to Curtis Crabtree.

With injuries and suspensions taking a toll on Seattle’s depth at cornerback, the Seahawks talking with free agent Antoine Winfield.

The 36-year-old Winfield signed with Seattle during the offseason, but opted to retire at the end of training camp. There were some questions of what kind of role he would play in Seattle, especially with Walter Thurmond playing well during the preseason and beating Winfield out for the nickel job. Now, with Thurmond suspended for four games and starter Brandon Browner likely out for the rest of the regular season due to a groin injury, Winfield could provide much-needed depth.
Although he said he was ready to retire, Winfield reportedly never filed retirement paperwork and stayed in shape, according to Ian Rapoport. There are questions of whether he’d want to return and how quickly he could help if he did. Seattle head coach Pete Carroll said a return was possible.
In the meantime, Seattle will continue to test its depth in the secondary. Byron Maxwell is expected to step into the starting outside role with Browner out while Jeremy Lane will likely see extended playing time in sub packages.
