Tennessee’s Michael Griffin will appeal suspension

After being suspended on Monday, Michael Griffin apologized to fans and the team and said he will appeal his suspension.

Don McPeak-USA TODAY Sports

Tennessee's Michael Griffin said he would would appeal a one-game suspension shortly after the NFL handed it down Monday.

Griffin was suspended for repeated high hits, the latest coming on Sunday against Oakland. Griffin was involved in a big collision with Oakland tight end Mychal Rivera. Griffin appeared to lower his helmet on the play and Rivera left the game with a concussion. Griffin was involved in a similar hit in October when he was fined for a hit on New York wide receiver Stephen Hill.

On Twitter, Griffin apologized to Titans fans, the organization, his teammates and to Rivera. He said he was trying to do his job but ended up costing his team. Based on appeals from earlier this season, Griffin does stand a chance to avoid missing any time. Tampa Bay's Dashon Goldson was suspended earlier in the season, but his suspension was reduced to a fine following an appeal. Washington safety Brandon Meriweather had a two-game suspension reduced to one game in October.

Griffin’s status will be known later in the week and before a crucial Week 13 matchup against Indianapolis. The 5-6 Titans are currently in the thick of the AFC Wild Card race and the game on Sunday will have considerable playoff implications.
