RG3, Colin Kaepernick take big hits early in 49ers-Redskins

Robert Griffin III and Colin Kaepernick have been under constant pressure during Monday night’s game between the 49ers and the Redskins.

Rob Carr

Robert Griffin III got off to an ugly start in Monday night's game between the Washington Redskins and the San Francisco 49ers. He went just 1-for-6 passing in the first quarter for a loss of one yard and an interception forced by pressure from outside linebacker Aldon Smith. In fact, the 49ers' defense has been making constant trouble for Griffin. For his part, Griffin has seemingly lost any sense of pocket awareness. On the interception, he hurried his read and committed his fourth red zone turnover since Week 9.

Here’s an example of what he has been dealing with:

Colin Kaepernick is playing much better. He started the game 6-for-9 for 118 yards and a touchdown, but he hasn't been immune to a ferocious Redskins pass rush. He took a hard hit from safety Brandon Meriweather that maaaaaybe (read: probably) should have been a penalty.

The no-call on Meriweather ties into something SB Nation’s NFL editor Ryan Van Bibber mentioned in his Debrief earlier in the day. NFL officials have been unable to apply the rules equally in all cases. That’s a problem in a league that wants to curb helmet-to-helmet hits and targeting.

Griffin’s problems, meanwhile, are emblematic of the struggling Redskins themselves: jittery, self-conscious, and not particularly good at football at the moment.
