Seahawks sign Perrish Cox

With Walter Thurmond suspended for the next four games, the Seahawks added depth to their secondary by signing Cox.

Ed Szczepanski-USA TODAY Sports

The Seattle Seahawks signed cornerback Perrish Cox, the team announced Tuesday. With Brandon Browner injured and Walter Thurmond suspended for the next four games due to a violation of the NFL's substance abuse policy, the Seahawks needed to add depth to their secondary.

Cox, 26, was drafted by the Denver Broncos in 2010. He appeared in 15 games with Denver as a rookie but was released prior to the 2011 season after being charged with sexual assault. Cox was later found not guilty.

Cox later signed with the San Francisco 49ers in 2012 and appeared in all 16 games. He was released on Nov. 12 this season after playing in nine games with San Francisco.

With Thurmond and Browner both out, it's unclear how Pete Carroll and the coaching staff will incorporate Cox into their defensive scheme. There is no denying Cox has the talent to make a difference, but character issues have plagued him throughout his career. He could make his debut against the New Orleans Saints next Monday night when the NFC's top two teams clash in primetime.

Even with Cox in the fold, the Seahawks are still considering adding veteran cornerback Antoine Winfield to their secondary.
