John Fox to miss 4-6 weeks following heart surgery

Denver Broncos head coach John Fox is set to miss 4-6 weeks following heart surgery to be performed on Tuesday, according to a report.

Ron Chenoy-USA TODAY Sports

Denver Broncos head coach John Fox will have heart surgery on Tuesday, according to Jay Glazer of FOX Sports. Fox will have a procedure on his aortic valve, and if there are no complications he will be discharged after two weeks and could return to regular coaching in four to six weeks.

Fox was admitted to a hospital with chest pains early on Saturday, and while some initially feared it was a heart attack, the team announced that was not the case. The team also said that they believe Fox will be OK prior to the news of his surgery.

Fox is in the third year of a four-year deal as head coach of the Broncos, and he seems in line for a contract extension given how well they’ve played thus far. They’re 7-1 on the season and feature the league’s best passing attack and one of the better defenses in the league.

It seems likely that someone like defensive coordinator Jack Del Rio would take over the reins while Fox is away, given his past experience as a head coach. He’s in his second season as the team’s defensive coordinator.
