Steve Gregory injury: Pats DB out with broken thumb

The Patriots will likely have to rely on a rookie to fill in for their injured veteran safety.

The New England Patriots added another name to their already lengthy list of injuries, as ESPN's Adam Schefter reports that defensive back Steve Gregory will miss some time after suffering a broken thumb in the team's Week 9 victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Gregory, 30, has played as the starting safety for the Patriots in seven of nine games this season, recording 52 tackles and two passes defended. One of the most veteran defensive players on the roster, Gregory has worn the green dot on his helmet that allows him to relay play calls to the rest of the defense.

With Gregory reportedly expected to miss multiple weeks with the injury, Richard Hill of SB Nation's Patriots blog, Pats Pulpit, expects the team will turn to rookie third-round pick, Duron Harmon, to take over for the veteran in the secondary.

Gregory signed with the San Diego Chargers as an undrafted free agent after the 2006 NFL Draft and played six seasons with the team before joining the Patriots in 2012. He has started in 50 of 106 games, including 19 starts since joining the Patriots.
