NFL news roundup: John Fox released from hospital, Doug Martin to injured reserve

Denver Broncos head coach John Fox is back home recovering from heart surgery and released a statement on Friday to provide insight about his recovery.

Denver Broncos head coach John Fox is out of the hospital and back at home recovering from heart surgery he underwent earlier in the week. With Jack Del Rio serving as the team's interim head coach, Fox released a statement on Friday to tell fans that he's recovering smoothly from the surgery:

”My recovery is progressing well -- I am feeling better and getting stronger each day. I will begin the next phase of my recovery in Charlotte and continue outpatient appointments with doctors, who will clear me to return to Denver when the time is right.

”Although I’m eager to return to coaching, my No. 1 focus is my health. I believe in our players and have full confidence in Jack Del Rio and our staff.

“While it’s extremely difficult to be away from the team on Sunday in San Diego, I’ll be cheering them on from home just like the many Broncos fans who have supported me throughout this process.”

Here’s other news from around the NFL that you may have missed on Friday:

Martin to IR

A torn labrum suffered by Buccaneers running back Doug Martin in Week 7 officially ended his 2013 season three weeks later, as the team moved the second-year player to injured reserve. Winless through the first half of their season, the Buccaneers elected to have Martin undergo surgery on his labrum rather than risk further damage. A Pro Bowl back in his rookie season in 2012, Martin finishes the year with 456 yards rushing and a touchdown on 127 carries.

Ponder dislocates shoulder

Minnesota Vikings quarterback Christian Ponder left the team's Thursday night victory over the Washington Redskins early with a non-throwing shoulder injury that was revealed to be a dislocation on Friday. Despite the injury, Ponder believes he'll be able to play in the team's Week 11 game against the Seattle Seahawks. Head coach Leslie Frazier was noncommittal about the possibility of Ponder returning so soon, but said that it was a possibility if the third-year quarterback could return to practice by Thursday. If not, the team will likely turn to Matt Cassel rather than Josh Freeman.

Foster hoping to avoid back surgery

Houston Texans running back Arian Foster has been dealing with back problems since the offseason and may need to have season-ending back surgery to repair an issue with a disc in his back. Already ruled out for Week 10, Foster is trying to do everything he can to return to the field in 2013, although pushing himself for an early return likely won't do much to change the end result for the 2-6 Houston Texans. Despite his injuries, Foster has played in every game in 2013 and has 542 yards rushing and a touchdown on 121 carries.

Vick doubtful vs. Packers

Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Michael Vick is still trying to recover from a nagging hamstring injury, and it will likely keep him out of action for another week, as he is officially listed as doubtful for the team's Week 10 game against the Green Bay Packers. One week removed from Nick Foles tossing seven touchdown passes against the Oakland Raiders, Vick's chances at starting for the Eagles were slim anyway, and it's possible that he spends the season on the sideline, injured or not.
