Doug Martin injury: Buccaneers RB placed on IR, ending 2nd season

The second-year running back suffered a torn labrum in Week 7 and will finally go to injured reserve, ending his 2013 season.

Kim Klement-USA TODAY Sports

The 2013 season is over for Tampa Bay Buccaneers running back Doug Martin, as the team placed the second-year back on injured reserve on Friday, three weeks after he suffered a torn labrum in Week 7 against the Atlanta Falcons.

Martin, 24, told reporters earlier in the week that, while surgery was inevitable to repair the shoulder, he was making progress and everything was “looking good” for a return in 2013. However, the roster move on Friday likely means Martin will have the surgery sooner rather than later.

Winless through their first eight games of the season, the long-term health of a young piece like Martin is the priority for the Buccaneers and they'll have to instead rely on the contributions of sixth-round rookie, Mike James, who has 254 yards rushing on 55 carries for the team so far.

A Pro Bowl selection in his rookie season in 2012, Martin finishes the season with 456 yards rushing and one touchdown on 127 carries.
