Aaron Rodgers injury: Packers could sit QB for season

The Packers quarterback could be shut down for the remainder of the season if he is unable to play Dec. 8 against the Falcons.

The Green Bay Packers could decide to shut quarterback Aaron Rodgers down for the season depending on how the next week unfolds, according to the NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.

Rodgers has missed the past four games with an injured collarbone, suffered in a Nov. 4 loss to the Chicago Bears, and since then the Packers have gone winless with three losses and a tie. Green Bay now sits at 5-6-1 on the season and is in grave danger of completely falling out of the playoff race if the team loses just one more game.

The Packers have had the Dec. 8 game against the Falcons marked on the calendar as the hopeful return for Rodgers, but Rapoport states that Rodgers will likely have a tough time returning in time for next week's game. If the star quarterback cannot play -- and the Packers lose and fall out of the playoff race -- then the team would conceivably shut him down and allow him to fully heal for next season.

It's a similar path followed by the Dallas Cowboys when Tony Romo injured his collarbone in 2010.

The Packers have struggled to fill the void left by Rodgers, with Scott Tolzien, Matt Flynn and Seneca Wallace all playing poorly when given the chance to play the past few weeks. Rodgers was rolling along with a 108.0 quarterback rating with 15 touchdowns and 4 interceptions before his injury.
