Nick Foles closes in on Peyton Manning’s record

Nick Foles now has 19 touchdown passes without an interception, one away from Peyton Manning’s record.

Howard Smith-USA TODAY Sports

Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Nick Foles threw three touchdowns in Sunday's win over the Arizona Cardinals. That leaves him one touchdown shy of Peyton Manning's record for most touchdown passes without throwing an interception. With three touchdowns against the Arizona Cardinals, Foles has now thrown for 19 scores with zero picks. Manning's record is 20 touchdowns without an interception.

It looked like Foles’ streak had come to an end when Patrick Peterson picked off one of his passes in the fourth quarter. However, a holding call on the Cardinals defense negated the play and kept Foles’ chances alive.

The Eagles are in Detroit next week. The Lions have 12 interceptions on the season, ranked 12th in the NFL.

It’s a hot streak that almost nobody saw coming. Foles started the season as Michael Vick’s backup, but got the starting job when Vick suffered a hamstring injury. He never looked back, leading the Eagles to a four-game winning streak and putting them in the heat of the NFC East title race. The Eagles beat the Cardinals in Philadelphia on Sunday, 24-21.

Foles was a third-round pick out of the University of Arizona in 2012. He started six games in his rookie year but most people didn't consider him a fit in Chip Kelly's offense. He has proven them wrong so far, doing a brilliant job of managing the up-tempo offense and even making Riley Cooper into a minor star. If he keeps it up, Kelly might have found his franchise quarterback without even drafting him.
