Robert Griffin III benched for remainder of season

The Redskins will be starting Kirk Cousins at quarterback, shutting down RGIII for the remainder of the season.

Washington Redskins quarterback Kirk Cousins has already been confirmed as the Week 15 starter, but he could hold on to the job longer than that. Sources have told The Washington Post that coach Mike Shanahan plans on making Robert Griffin III inactive for the final three games of the season. Rex Grossman will be the second-string quarterback behind Cousins.

Griffin confirmed in a Wednesday press conference that he was being shut down for the remainder of the 2013 NFL season.

“I’m sure everybody knows by now that coach decided to shut me down for the rest of the season,” Griffin told the media. “I expressed my desire to play.”

Shanahan has publicly stated that he’s benching Griffin out of concern for his health, but reports have stated that Shanahan is unhappy with the friendly relationship between owner Daniel Snyder and Griffin. The Post expects the Redskins to part with Shanahan at the end of the season, if not sooner.

“I can’t bother myself thinking about those things,” Griffin responded when asked if he believed he was being shut down for his own health.

Cousins will be making his second NFL start against the Atlanta Falcons this week. He started one game in his rookie year when Griffin suffered his first knee injury, leading the Redskins to a win over the Cleveland Browns.
