Robert Griffin III angry about benching, according to report
A franchise quarterback benched, and a coaching staff waiting for the ax to drop. The situation in Washington continues to become more convoluted.
Robert Griffin III was benched for his protection, according to Washington Redskins head coach Mike Shanahan -- but the quarterback is “extremely angry” he was benched, according to a report from Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network.

Shanahan said the team was concerned by the number of hits Griffin III took in 13 games, with the coach saying he had the blessing of Redskins owner Daniel Snyder to keep their franchise quarterback healthy. Latest reports indicate this was not true. The benching was due to performance, not fear of injury, according to Michael Silver.
The mood inside the Redskins organization appears to be one of doubt and mistrust, with the team’s coaching staff believing they will be fired shortly following the season.
Sources closes to the Redskins coaching staff tell Rapoport that the coaches believe they will be fired, but there’s been no official determination from the organization. At this point, they want to be cut loose so they can be “put out of their misery.”
There will be no resignations, however. Shanahan is due $7 million and will not walk away from it, according to Rapoport. The start of a rift between coaching and ownership could have happened as early as last year, with Silver reporting that Synder was the driving force behind trading up for Griffin III, not Shanahan.
Three weeks remain in the 2013 season for the Washington Redskins. They have already been eliminated from playoff contention, and it’s unclear who will hold control in 2014. Rumors have set up a Machiavellian battle with Synder and Griffin III on one side, and the team’s coaching staff on the other -- but there might not be a long wait before these issues are settled.
