Stephen Hill injury: Jets WR placed on injured reserve

Stephen Hill was placed on injured reserve by the Jets on Friday, ending his 2013 season after just 12 games played.

Stephen Hill's second season with the New York Jets is over after 12 games played. According to NFL.com's Ian Rapoport, the Jets have placed Hill on injured reserve, where he will spend the remainder of the 2013 season. Hill missed last week's game after injuring his knee in Week 13 against the Miami Dolphins. He did not practice Wednesday or Thursday this week.

Hill's season ends with just 24 receptions for 342 yards and a touchdown. His numbers were only a mild improvement over his rookie year totals. After being selected in the second round of the 2012 NFL draft--two spots ahead of Alshon Jeffery, notably -- Hill had 21 receptions for 252 yards and three touchdowns in his first year, during which he appeared in just 11 games due to nagging hamstring and knee injuries.

Hill entered the league as a rough-cut prospect. His combination of size and speed was arguably unmatched among 2012 draft hopefuls, but he had also had just 49 receptions for 1,248 yards and nine touchdown in three seasons at Georgia Tech, playing in a triple-option offense.

Hill had opportunities to stand out with Santonio Holmes and Jeremy Kerley sidelined for significant portions of this season, but he was not able to become the big-play threat the Jets envisioned. No doubt, Geno Smith's struggles played a role, but after two disappointing seasons Hill's lack of production thus far is concerning. We will have to wait until 2014 to see if he can bounce back.
