Jason Pierre-Paul injury: Giants DE likely out for the season, per report

Doctors have recommended that Jason Pierre-Paul sit out the rest of the season due to his shoulder issues.

The Star-Ledger-USA TODAY Sports

Jason Pierre-Paul is likely out for the season. According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, doctors have recommended that Pierre-Paul sit out the remainder of the regular season to rest the shoulder injury he suffered during the New York Giants' loss to the Dallas Cowboys in Week 12.

Pierre-Paul has already been ruled out for Sunday's matchup against the Seattle Seahawks, so he would play two more games at most for the 5-8 Giants, who have already been eliminated from the playoffs. Pierre-Paul has insisted recently that he will play again this season if he physically can, but that was prior to Friday's report that doctors are against the idea.

Pierre-Paul has struggled through 11 games this season. He has just two sacks, two years removed from a 16.5-sack effort in 2011. Pierre-Paul spent this past offseason recovering from back surgery. As Ed Valentine at Giants blog Big Blue View points out, Pierre-Paul was never truly 100 percent healthy this season.

The 24-year-old remains the Giants’ most talented defensive player. He is the one player on the roster who, at his best, can turn what is a statistically middle of the pack defense, into an upper echelon one.

Whether he plays again this season or not, it is apparent we won’t see his best in 2013. All the Giants can do is hope that rest is the right prescription for his shoulder, that his health will allow him to go through a full offseason program and that the dominant version of JPP returns next season.
