Robert Mathis breaks Colts sack record

There’s a new leader in Indianapolis’ team records.

Indianapolis Colts linebacker Robert Mathis is enjoying the best season of his career, and in Week 15 he broke a pair of team records against the Houston Texans.

Mathis recorded the 108th sack of his career in the third quarter of the game on Sunday. This eclipsed the previous record of 107 sacks, held by former defensive end Dwight Freeney who is now with the San Diego Chargers. Mathis has been unstoppable in 2013, staking his claim on defensive player of the year honors in his second season since moving from being an in-line defensive end to a linebacker.

The sack also pushed Mathis to 16.5 on the season, besting the previous single-season record also set by Freeney back in 2004. He has amassed two or more sacks on five occasions this season, and there’s time to extend this to six in the second half against the Texans.

Mathis’ season is made more impressive by the lack of help around him. He’s the only player on the Colts with more than 5.0 sacks, making him a targeted player that opposing offenses are unable to stop.
