Cam Newton sets the tone at halftime vs. Jets

Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton had success in the first half against the New York Jets, resulting in his team leading 16-6 at the break.

Newton completed 80 percent of his passes, throwing for 224 yards and a touchdown. The third-year quarterback found five different receivers in the first half, with running back DeAngelo Williams being a huge difference-maker when he ran a screen pass for a 72-yard touchdown. He's joined by Greg Olsen and Brandon LaFell, both of whom have more than 50 receiving yards in the first half.

The stout Jets defensive line has done a good job limiting the quarterback's rushing ability, with Newton gaining 12 yards on four attempts. Interior protection has been an issue for Carolina throughout the season, and strong pressure from Muhammad Wilkerson collapsed interior rushing lanes and held Mike Tolbert and DeAngelo Williams to 27 yards on 11 attempts.

Geno Smith was inconsistent in the first half, but had flashes -- finding David Nelson on three occasions for 44 yards. The Jets will need an offensive lift in the second half if they hope to bounce back.
