NFL will offer list of promising coaches, GMs to owners

The league is hoping the candidate recommendations of a new committee can increase diversity in the NFL’s coaching and executive ranks.

As part of the NFL’s initiative to increase minority hiring, the league has formed a committee that will compile and share lists of promising coaching and general manager candidates for the benefit of teams searching for new hires.

As Peter King reports, the eight-person committee, which includes former Buccaneers and Colts head coach Tony Dungy and former Colts GM Bill Polian, recently finalized a double-digit list of recommended names. The list, which contains both minority and white candidates, is about more than increasing racial diversity among the NFL coaching and executive ranks, the league says -- it will also expose new names and under-the-radar talent.

“The focus is not just the hot name,” said Robert Gulliver, the NFL’s executive vice president for human resources. “It’s identifying the new talent too. New names will emerge.”

Among some of the names on the list are Stanford coach David Shaw, former Bears coach Lovie Smith (both of whom are African American) former Bucs and Raiders coach Jon Gruden and his brother and current Bengals offensive coordinator Jay Gruden (who are both white).

Owners are free to use or ignore the list as they see fit.

Last January, 14 consecutive head coaching and GM jobs were filled with white men, King reports. The league is hoping the committee’s list will help buck that trend.
