Chip Kelly: Nick Foles is Eagles starting QB ‘for the next 1,000 years here’

Chip Kelly is confident in the second-year passer to lead the Eagles for the future.

The Philadelphia Eagles are still less than a year into the Chip Kelly experiment, but the team has presumably found its quarterback of the future, as Kelly gave a huge endorsement to second-year passer Nick Foles in his Monday press conference.

“He’s the starting quarterback for the next 1,000 years here,” Kelly told reporters, including Reuben Frank of Comcast Sportsnet Philadelphia. That means, provided he stays healthy, Foles will be the starter for the 2014 season as well.

After a lengthy battle with Michael Vick for the starting quarterback job, Foles has compiled a 5-1 record as starter, throwing 19 touchdowns and zero interceptions. His 125.2 passer rating is the top mark in the NFL and far above the respectable 86.5 mark that Vick has tallied in six starts.

Vick, 33, signed a one-year deal with the Eagles in February, and will likely be allowed by the team to reach free agency after the season.

On Monday, Kelly praised Foles for his care for the football. “No interceptions yet is a credit to Foles and him not putting the ball in harm’s way,” Kelly said. “Very rarely does he make bad decisions.”

The Eagles earned a fourth consecutive victory on Sunday with a 24-21 win over the Arizona Cardinals. Foles finished with 21-of-34 passes completed for 237 yards and three touchdowns. Next up, they are scheduled to host the Detroit Lions in Week 14.

Philadelphia and the Dallas Cowboys are tied for first place in the NFC East at 7-5.
