Jay Cutler injury: Bears QB remains week-to-week

Jay Cutler’s status remains up in the air heading into Week 14.

Rob Grabowski-USA TODAY Sports

Chicago's Jay Cutler said his goal is to return in Week 14, but Bears head coach Marc Trestman said the quarterback's status is still unknown and his recovery remains "week-to-week."

Cutler missed the last three games after suffering a high ankle sprain in Week 10. The Bears are 1-2 without him and are on the edge of falling out of playoff contention in the NFC. The Bears play the Cowboys on Monday night, giving Cutler an extra day to recover. The long week also means his status is likely to remain uncertain until at least Thursday when Chicago practices for the first time.

Coming off back-to-back losses, the Bears are 6-6 and one game behind Detroit in the NFC North, with the Lions holding the tiebreaker. The Bears are now two games back in the wild card race. Three of their final four games will come against teams currently in the playoff race.

If Cutler is unable to start on Monday, Josh McCown will once again get the call in relief. McCown has played well filling in for Cutler, but Chicago's scoring has dropped considerably without their starter. The Bears average 29.0 points per game in Cutler starts and 22.8 PPG in games McCown starts.
