Giants vs. Lions 2013 results: New York sinks Detroit in OT, 23-20

The Lions turned the ball over three times, allowing a sputtering Giants team to hang around and eke out the overtime win.

The New York Giants threw a wrench into the Detroit Lions' playoff hopes with an overtime win, 23-20. The Giants were able to take advantage of sloppy play and a questionable set of play-calling at the end of regulation, eliminating the Lions from playoff contention. Josh Brown's 45-yard field goal was the second game-winner Detroit has allowed in as many weeks, having lost on Justin Tucker's record-breaker last Monday.

Despite dominating the time of possession and outgaining the Giants by over 100 yards on the ground, the Lions' three turnovers kept the Giants close. Will Hill took the Lions' third turnover -- a Matthew Stafford pick -- to the house with five minutes remaining in the game to tie the score at 20. And after getting the ball back with a minute remaining and two timeouts, Detroit coach Jim Schwartz decided to pack it in and take his chances in overtime.

Detroit's turnovers led to 17 New York points on a day when the Giants had trouble moving the ball. Eli Manning went 23-of-42 for 256 yards and a touchdown, throwing one interception. Manning's lone touchdown was to Jerrel Jernigan, who caught six balls for 80 yards on the day.

Fantasy studs and duds

Matthew Stafford and Calvin Johnson had disappointing days, with the caveat that Johnson was a game-time decision in the first place. Joique Bell added a touchdown to his season total, giving him eight on the year.

As for the Giants, let’s hope you started their defense.

Injury report

Lions corners Louis Delmas and Bill Bentley collided in the first half, leaving Bentley concussed and Delmas with an elbow injury. Delmas started the second half, but Bentley was ruled out after his head was examined by trainers.

Giants running back Andre Brown was carted off in the fourth quarter and did not return.

Did they cover?

The Lions entered the game as 9.5-point favorites, according to OddsShark. At no point did the Lions have this spread covered, with the Giants covering any and all money-line propositions.
