Colts vs. Chiefs game recap: Indianapolis wins game despite yardage disparity

The Kansas City Chiefs win all the statistical categories except for the actual scoreboard.

The Kansas City Chiefs are going to be kicking themselves for this one. Despite gaining over 500 yards in total offense, the Chiefs still lost to the Indianapolis Colts, 20-13, on Sunday at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City.

The Colts used two field goals by Adam Vinatieri, a Darius Butler 32-yard interception return for a touchdown and a well-timed fourth quarter Reggie Wayne touchdown catch to pull out an improbable victory and a spot in the AFC playoffs.

The Chiefs gained 352 yards on the ground, including 226 yards and one touchdown on 22 carries by running back Jamaal Charles and 101 yards on 15 carries by running back Peyton Hillis. But they couldn't turn their domination on the ground into points, partially due to quarterback Brady Quinn throwing two interceptions. Colts quarterback Andrew Luck finished with only 205 yards on just 17-for-35 passing but his timely touchdown to Wayne was the difference in the game.

The Colts improved to 10-5 on the season and the Chiefs dropped to a league-worst tie with the Jacksonville Jaguars at 2-13.

Winners: Colts’ fans as they have the playoff spot they’ve so desperately yearned for since last season.

Losers: Brady Quinn. He can’t even pull out a win when his running game goes absolutely bonkers. Under 50-percent completion rate, two interceptions and no touchdowns? Not going to cut it.

Best/worst stat of the game: The Kansas City Chiefs amassed 352 yards on the ground on 44 carries for an 8.0 yards per carry average. Talk about having your mediocre quarterback’s back. Oh, and the Colts gave up all of that.

Fantasy studs/duds: Jamaal Charles. He gained 226 yards on 22 carries with one touchdown which will always make the fantasy gurus happy. Reggie Wayne also put up good numbers with 81 yards receiving and one touchdown.

Odds/Gambling: The Colts entered the game as 6-point favorites and covered the spread.

Next team on the schedule: The Colts finish the season playing host to the division-rival Houston Texans on Sunday, Dec. 30. The Chiefs will end their forgettable season at the Denver Broncos.
