Jay Cutler named Bears’ starting quarterback for Week 17

Mark Trestman has no plans to make changes at the quarterback position after the Bears’ blowout loss to the Eagles on Sunday night.

Jay Cutler will keep his job as the starting quarterback for the Chicago Bears despite a mediocre performance in the team's ugly 54-11 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday night, according to ESPN's Ian Rapoport.

Coach Mark Trestman was resolute after the game that Cutler will start over Josh McCown in the Bears' win-or-go-home showdown with the Green Bay Packers in Week 17.

“No decision there. Jay Cutler will start. No one played well enough to win in all 3 phases.”

Cutler’s numbers against the Eagles weren’t terrible considering the margin of defeat, though he failed to provide a spark for a Bears offense that put up its lowest scoring total of the season. He went 20-of-35 for 222 yards, one touchdown and one interception.

McCown saw limited action in garbage time, going 2-of-4 for 20 yards.

Trestman has repeatedly beaten back the flames of a quarterback controversy in Chicago, even when McCown was putting up gaudy numbers with Cutler sidelined by an injury for an extended period. McCown went 3-2 with a 109.8 passer rating as a starter, but was returned to his place on the bench as soon as Cutler was ready to return in Week 15.

On the season, Cutler has thrown for 2,395 yards, 17 touchdowns and 11 interceptions in ten games. McCown has 1,829 yards, 13 touchdowns and just one pick.

The Bears missed an opportunity to clinch the playoffs against the Eagles and must now face the Packers in the final game of the regular season with the NFC North title and a postseason berth on the line.
