Browns vs. Jets 2013: New York steps up against Cleveland

Our SB Nation writers are reacting to the Jets win over the Browns in Week 16.

The Jets outplayed the Browns in the final quarter of Sunday's game, which led to a New York victory. Quarterback Geno Smith threw for two touchdowns and avoided turnovers in the win and the Jets were able to control the clock with running combination of Chris Ivory and Bilal Powell. On defense, the unit produced three sacks and two interceptions against the Browns.

The Browns started quickly but stumbled and failed to score down the stretch. Cleveland was held to 283 total yards, while quarterback Jason Campbell failed to get anything going. The Browns defense was not much help either, as the Jets were able to put up 422 yards on Sunday.

John B of Gang Green Nation was thrilled with the improvement of Geno Smith in Sunday’s win:

Geno Smith: I will have to confirm by rewatching, but Geno’s mechanics in this game looked better than they have in a long time to me. He was consistently setting his feet on his dropbacks and planting his back foot, which led to balls coming out on time and accurate passes. He made good reads and used his legs well, netting 48 rushing yards. Geno finished 20 for 36 with 214 yards, 2 passing touchdown, and 1 rushing touchdown. Was it a dominant performance? No. Does it overshadow an otherwise disappointing rookie year? No. What it does is provide a glimmer of hope and perhaps gives Geno confidence as we get closer to the offseason. At the very least, it is good to see he has bounced back from and was not destroyed by that brutal stretch of games he played last month. He also drew a late hit penalty with a nice flop.

Chris Pokorny of Dawgs By Nature believes this was one of the worst performances of the season for Cleveland:

The Cleveland Browns saved perhaps their most inept display of the season for Week 16 of the NFL season, losing to the New York Jets by a score of 24-13.

The only bright spot in the game might have been RB Edwin Baker, who showed good quickness against a top-ranked Jets defense, posting 17 carries for 64 yards (3.8 YPC) and 1 touchdown. The Browns' record now sits as 4-11 with their final game of the season being against the Steelers next week.

Another good sign for next season is that Cleveland's draft position should remain fairly high.
