Tony Romo injury: Cowboys QB could still be cleared to play Eagles

Romo could still play in the season finale, according to team owner Jerry Jones, who is hopeful that the Cowboys quarterback will be cleared to return.

Brad Mills-USA TODAY Sports

Tony Romo is done for the year, according to everyone except Dallas Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett and owner Jerry Jones, who both say that the 10-year veteran still has a chance to play against the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 17.

On Monday night, Jones told David Moore of The Dallas Morning News that it is still possible that Romo could be cleared to play in the team’s regular season finale:

“The facts are there is a lot we can’t comment on,” Jones said. “But the most important thing is if he feels better as the week goes along, there is nothing structurally to prevent him from playing. He might be cleared to play.”

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported on Monday that Romo suffered a season-ending back injury in Week 17 before Chris Mortensen clarified that it was a herniated disk that would require surgery. FOX Sports’ Jay Glazer also reported that Romo suffered a herniated disk, although he said Romo would look at his options.

Romo, 33, led the Cowboys on a nine-play, 87-yard drive in the final minutes of a Week 16 game against the Redskins, finding DeMarco Murray on a 10-yard touchdown pass to keep the team's playoff hopes alive. Through 15 starts in 2013, Romo has tallied 3,828 yards passing with 31 touchdowns and 10 interceptions.

If Romo is unable to play, Kyle Orton is expected to make the start for the Cowboys against the Eagles in a Sunday Night Football game that will decide the winner of the NFC East. David Carr, John Skelton and Tyler Thigpen are all expected to have a workout with the team this week, according to NFL.com's Ian Rapoport, although flying the players out on Christmas Eve may be a problem for the Cowboys.
