NFL news roundup: Tony Romo to IR, Robbie Gould extended through 2017

Tony Romo’s season is over and the Cowboys will now have to rely on Kyle Orton to lead them to the postseason.

Greg Fiume

Speculation regarding Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo is over, as the team officially placed the three-time Pro Bowler on injured reserve following surgery on Friday morning.

Romo, 33, finished the 2013 season with 31 touchdowns and 10 interceptions and had a passer rating over 90 for the eighth consecutive year. His last throw of the season was a game-winning touchdown pass that set up what will be, in effect, an NFC East title game against the Eagles, although Kyle Orton will now start in his place.

Here is the other NFL news from Friday that you may have missed:

Gould extended through 2017

Chicago Bears kicker Robbie Gould is fewer than 100 points away from becoming the franchise's all-time leading scorer and will presumably reach that mark after receiving a four-year contract extension on Friday that will keep him with the team through the 2017 season. Gould, 31, has an 86 percent career success rate on field goals, making him the sixth-most accurate field goal kicker of all time.

Jaguars give Marks 4-year, $22 million contract

Defensive tackle Sen'Derrick Marks signed a one-year, $1.5 million contract with the Jacksonville Jaguars in the 2013 offseason and signed a new four-year deal worth $22 million on Friday that will keep him with the team through the 2017 season. In his first season with the Jaguars, Marks has tallied four sacks, two forced fumbles, three fumble recoveries and eight passes defended.

Steve Smith out with knee injury

The Carolina Panthers are one win away from earning a bye in the first round of the playoffs, but they'll have to get that win against the Atlanta Falcons without No. 1 wide receiver Steve Smith, who suffered a PCL sprain in Week 16. There's a chance Smith could have played, but with a postseason spot already clinched, the logical move for the Panthers was to sit the star receiver in Week 17. Smith has 64 receptions for 745 yards and four touchdowns in 2013.

Gonzalez to be honored

Falcons tight end Tony Gonzalez is retiring after 17 seasons in the NFL and Sunday will be his last career game after 12 seasons with the Chiefs and five more in Atlanta. On Friday, the Falcons announced that they would honor Gonzalez with a commemorative helmet featuring Chiefs and Falcons logos as well as a signature from NFL commissioner Roger Goodell.
