2014 NFL Draft: Wyoming QB Brett Smith will skip senior season

“After much consideration, I have decided to forgo my senior season at UW to pursue my dream of playing quarterback in the National Football League,” Smith said, via the Star-Tribune.

Smith completed 62.7 percent of his passes last season, averaging 7.2 yards per attempt while tossing 29 touchdowns. The 6’3, 206-pound Smith was a three-year starter for the Cowboys. Originally from Salem, Ore., his journey to the NFL was different than most early-entrants. Ranked as a 2-star prospect by most recruiting services, Smith didn’t garner many offers coming out of high school. He reportedly received offers from San Jose State, New Mexico State and Eastern Washington in addition to Wyoming. He originally committed to SJSU before switching to the Cowboys.

In addition to his exploits as a passer, Smith brings a dual-threat element. He ran for 573 yards last season and 1,531 yards during his career, an impressive number when you consider NCAA stats subtract sack yardage from quarterback rushing totals.

Smith is currently the No. 14 quarterback prospect in the draft, according to Mocking the Draft. He should, however, move up with some underclassmen ahead of him potentially heading back to school. Although he currently projects as a mid-to-late round pick, he will have the opportunity to move up draft boards with pre-draft workouts. He has a solid arm to go along with good size and enough athleticism to catch the eye of NFL scouts.
