BJ Raji contract: Packers NT turned down a new deal, per report

Raji reportedly turned down a new offer worth $8 million a year, putting his Green Bay future in doubt.

Andrew Weber-USA TODAY Sports

Green Bay Packers defensive tackle B.J. Raji has already turned down a new contract offer, according to ESPN's Packers blogger Rob Demovsky. The offer would have paid him $8 million dollars annually.

The declined offer suggests that Raji wants to test the open market. The lane-clogger is set to hit free agency in the offseason, and reportedly wants to play in a defense that allows more freedom to rush the passer. Raji hasn’t recorded a sack since the 2011 season.

A first-round pick out of Boston College in 2009, Raji played his entire career to date with the Packers. He had his best season in 2010, recording 6.5 sacks and 49 tackles, but has experienced a slow decline since then. Raji is playing in a reduced role this season, recording just 15 tackles in 15 games. If he tests free agency, he may have a tough time getting a better deal than the $8 million per year the Packers offered him.
