Redskins consider legal action against radio station parodies

A Washington radio station has been poking fun at the Redskins organization, and Dan Snyder is none too pleased.

In addition to being short on wins in 2013, it seems the Washington Redskins organization lacks a sense of humor.

The Washington Post has cited sources indicating that team executives threatened a Washington sports-talk radio station with legal action in response to a series of parody broadcasts that lampoon the struggling franchise, which is in the middle of an unexpected 3-9 season.

WJFK-FM (“106.7 The Fan”) has been running a regular segment in which host Danny Rouhier impersonates the Redskins’ radio play-by-play team, comprised of Larry Michael, Sonny Jurgenson and Chris Cooley. The segments poke fun at everything from the on-field product to high prices at Fed-Ex Field to team owner Dan Snyder.

Snyder, who also owns the ESPN980 network that broadcasts the actual play-by-play, has not been amused. Redskins spokesman Tony Wyllie reportedly complained to WJFK last week, claiming the parodies were malicious and threatening a lawsuit.

The move wouldn’t be a first for Snyder, who in 2011 brought, and later dropped, a defamation suit against Washington City Paper over an article that criticized his tenure as the team’s owner.

WJFK has stated it will continue running the weekly parodies.

Wyllie defended the organization’s complaint in an interview with the Post, asserting “All we did was ask questions about what they were doing. Once they said it was all in jest, we were fine with it.”

“I have a sense of humor, like everyone else,” he said. “It’s a joke, and I take it as a joke. Once they said it was all a joke, that’s all there was to it.”

If the Redskins do have a sense of humor, they sure are late on the pickup.
