Jon Gruden will not coach in 2014, per report

The former head coach will return to the booth next season for Monday Night Football.

USA TODAY Sports

Former NFL head coach and current Monday Night Football analyst Jon Gruden will be sticking with his television gig and will not pursue a coaching job in 2014, according to a report from Chris Mortensen and Adam Schefter of ESPN.

Gruden's has not coached since he was fired as the head coach of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers following the 2008 season and his name frequently is listed as a possibly every time there's a notable coaching vacancy in the NFL. Yet Gruden has been reportedly content and happy with his job at ESPN and prying him away has proven difficult, if there were teams that was as legitimately interested as reports have suggested.

The latest such report came from ESPN itself, with John Clayton essentially stating that Gruden’s name was at the top of the list of possible successors to Gary Kubiak in Houston. This morning, Chris Mortensen reported instead on ESPN that the former coach will return to Monday Night Football in 2014 and that another coaching job is not in his immediate future.

While Monday Night Football has taken a bit of a hit in popularity and prestige since the switch to ESPN, Gruden has been a bright spot in the broadcast. While he is a bit over-exuberant at times it’s clear that he has enjoyed his job in the booth rather than down on the field these past few years.
