Tyrann Mathieu injury: Cardinals DB could have ACL tear, slated for MRI

The Honey Badger’s potential Defensive Rookie of the Year campaign could be done with a ligament tear.

Mark J. Rebilas-USA TODAY Sports

Arizona Cardinals safety Tyrann Mathieu went down with a knee injury during the team's win over the St. Louis Rams, and reports indicate he could be done for the season. The rookie phenom is scheduled to undergo an MRI on Monday to determine if he has torn his ACL, according to Ian Rapoport.

Mathieu was carted off the field Sunday and did not return after bending his left knee awkwardly while returning a kick during the third quarter. Head coach Bruce Arians stated in his post-game press conference that the injury “appeared to be” an ACL.

Kent Somers of AZCentral reported that Mathieu was seen “bawling his eyes out” after being informed of the likelihood of a ligament tear.

If Mathieu is indeed shelved for the reamainder of 2013, the Cardinals defense loses an impact player who has wasted no time making his presence felt in his first year in the league. The Honey Badger has tallied 68 tackles, a sack, a forced fumble, two interceptions and nine passes defensed in the process of garnering Defensive Rookie of the Year attention.
