Drew Brees reaches 50,000 passing yards mark

Brees joined an elite group on Sunday by reaching a lofty milestone.

On Sunday night, Drew Brees eclipsed the 50,000-passing yard plateau, becoming only the fifth quarterback to reach such heights.

It only took Brees 183 games to accomplish the feat, the fastest of any quarterback in NFL history. The Super Bowl champion reached the milestone without much attention, as described by both receiver Lance Moore and coach Sean Payton, according to the New Orleans Times-Picayune.

"I think a lot of people had gone home by that time to beat the traffic," joked receiver Lance Moore."

Added Saints coach Sean Payton: "It was just kind of a nod, 'attaboy.'"

This season, Brees has continued his march toward the Pro Football Hall of Fame. The former Purdue Boilermaker has thrown for 4.107 yards and 33 touchdowns against only eight interceptions. With three games left in the campaign, Brees could reach 5,000 yards for the third consecutive year and fourth time in his career.

Brees began his career with the San Diego Chargers after being the first pick of the second round in 2001. After five seasons with San Diego, the Chargers decided to go with Philip Rivers and let Brees test free agency. He signed with the Saints and became one of the most prolific quarterbacks in NFL history, winning Super Bowl XLIV along the way.
