Redskins exploring options for split with Mike Shanahan

The Redskins could attempt to withhold remaining money to Mike Shanahan upon his firing.

Brad Mills-USA TODAY Sports

Mike Shanahan's days with the Washington Redskins appear numbered, and the team is reportedly preparing for a split that could include an attempt to withhold remaining money due to the coach, according to a report from Mark Maske of the Washington Post.

Shanahan, 61, was named the head coach of the Redskins in 2010 and his contract with the team runs through the 2014 season. Under normal circumstances, he would be owed the full $7 million he is due in 2014 whether he is fired or not, but the Redskins are reportedly considering firing him for cause that would forfeit his right to the remaining money.

The contention from the Redskins would be that Shanahan violated his contract with his involvement in the dissemination of a report filed by ESPN that contended the coach almost left his position with his team due to the relationship between owner Dan Snyder and quarterback Robert Griffin III.

The Redskins traded first-round selections in the 2012, 2013 and 2014 NFL Drafts to acquire the second overall pick in the 2012 NFL Draft to select Griffin. After winning the AP Offensive Rookie of the Year Award in 2012, he has struggled in his second season, throwing 16 touchdowns and 12 interceptions while leading the team to a 3-10 record.
