Super Bowl schedule 2013 for Ravens vs. 49ers: The game itself is only part of the event

The game between the 49ers and Ravens will be the highlight of Super Bowl weekend, but it will be only one of a number of events.

Matthew Emmons-USA TODAY Sports

While millions will tune in to watch the Ravens and 49ers play in Super Bowl XLVII, the game itself will only be one event of what is scheduled to be a busy weekend in New Orleans.

There are a number of events scheduled before the game and then hours of pregame shows and other programming leading up to kickoff. The weekend begins Friday night with a pair of concerts. The Super Bowl XLVII concert series will begin with the VH1 Best Super Bowl Concert Ever. That show is scheduled to begin at 9 p.m. ET, but won't be the only concert on Friday night. New Orleans quarterback Drew Brees will host the Drew Brees Hurricane Sandy Relief Concert, which will include performances by Nelly and Swizz Beatz. That show will begin at 9 p.m. ET.

Saturday kicks off with the Super Saturday of Service, a community service initiative which will provide improvements to five New Orleans playgrounds and the surrounding area. The project begins at Harrell Stadium before moving to the Lyons Center, Hunter’s Field, Pontchartrain Park and Kingswood Park. Saturday will wrap up with the CMT Crossroads concert. The concert is scheduled to begin at 10 p.m. ET and will feature performances from Journey and Rascal Flatts.

The Super Bowl is the crown jewel of Sunday’s schedule, but it isn’t scheduled to kick off until 6:30 p.m. ET. Fortunately, CBS has plenty of programming scheduled leading up to kickoff. It all starts with the Road to the Super Bowl at 11 a.m. ET. The hourlong show will be an NFL Films look back at the “greatest sights and sounds from the 2012 season.” The next hour will be filled with a tribute to the host city of New Orleans called New Orleans: Let the Good Times Roll. Things will shift back to football at 1 p.m. ET, when Phil Simms announces his All-Iron team.

At 2 p.m. ET, CBS will begin pregame coverage with The Super Bowl Today. The show will feature CBS's regular pregame crew of James Brown, Dan Marino, Boomer Esiason, Shannon Sharpe and Bill Cowher. Greg Gumbel will anchor the show, which will preview the game and run from 2 to 6 p.m. ET.

With game time approaching, CBS will switch to the Super Bowl on CBS Kick-Off Show at 6 p.m. ET. This show will lead up to kickoff and is scheduled to include at least two musical performances. A group of students from Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., are scheduled to sing America the Beautiful. That performance will be followed by Alicia Keys, who will sing the national anthem.

Super Bowl XLVII is scheduled to kick off at 6:30 p.m. but that won’t be the final event of the day. Beyonce and the members of Destiny’s Child will perform during the Super Bowl halftime show. The halftime show will be available for the first time via a live online stream.

Following the halftime performance, the attention will turn back fully to football as the 49ers and Ravens play the second half to determine who walks away with the Lombardi Trophy.
