Already reportedly far apart on contract negotiations early in the offseason, the Miami Dolphins are reportedly not considering the franchise tag for cornerback Sean Smith, who has played in Miami since being drafted by the team in 2009.

Smith, who would be entering his fifth season in 2013, signed a four-year contract with the Dolphins that will expire in March. Smith’s contract was expected to be among the team’s priorities this offseason, but as the Miami Herald and NFL.com report, the team will not use the franchise tag to hold onto Smith’s services.

According to the report, Smith was looking for a contract in the range of $8-$10 million per year, while a franchise tag would garner a one-year contract worth about $10.7 million, according to Yahoo! Sports.

Representation for Smith reportedly was looking for a contract in the range of Dallas Cowboys cornerback Brandon Carr (five years, $50.1 million) or Jason McCourty (five-year extension, $43 million).

In four seasons, Smith has recorded five interceptions and forced three fumbles, while recording 179 total tackles and recovering one fumble.

In 2012, Smith recorded 59 tackles and had two interceptions, while McCourty had 92 tackles and four interceptions and Carr had 53 tacles and three picks.
