Drew Stanton rumored among Cardinals quarterback options

Indianapolis Colts backup quarterback Drew Stanton could follow Bruce Arians to Arizona and could be given a chance to compete for Arizona’s starting quarterback job in 2013.

Arizona Cardinals fans have come to realize that desperate times call for desperate measures.

Arizona replaced head coach Ken Whisenhunt with Bruce Arians, who spent the season serving as Indianapolis' interim head coach and offensive coordinator. Arizona's lack of a good quarterback ultimately led to Whisenhunt's demise, as Arizona started Kevin Kolb, Brian Hoyer, Ryan Lindley and John Skelton in 2012.

In 2013, Arians could bring in a familiar face to be his quarterback -- Colts backup quarterback Drew Stanton. According to the National Football Post, there are "rumblings" that Stanton could follow Arians to Phoenix.

There are some rumblings that Colts backup quarterback Drew Stanton may follow Bruce Arians out west to Arizona. Arians was impressed with how Stanton performed in preseason and practiced all season with the Colts, and he needs a quarterback. The fact that Stanton knows Arians’ offense and fits in it gives Stanton an edge. Stanton is likely to have multiple suitors, but the Cardinals’ opportunity might be the most intriguing for him because it could be his best chance to be a starter.

Stanton doesn’t have much NFL experience, appearing in just 12 games during his career -- and none since 2010. Still, Stanton has had plenty of time to study the last two seasons, and is familiar with Arians’ offense.

In 12 career appearances, Stanton has completed 55.6% of his passes for 1,158 yards, averaging 6.19 yards per attempt. Stanton has thrown five touchdowns and has been intercepted nine times, while fumbling on four occasions.

Even if Stanton isn’t the most appealing name for Cardinals fans, he would, at least, provide Arians with a relatively known quantity -- and chemistry between coach and quarterback certainly counts for something.
