Buccaneers, Roy Miller make little progress in contract talks

Tampa Bay hasn’t put much effort into re-signing Roy Miller this offseason. Will the defensive tackle be looking for a new team soon?

USA TODAY Sports

Defensive tackle Roy Miller is set to become an unrestricted free agent in a few weeks, and from the look of his current situation, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers aren't too worried about that fact. According to the Tampa Bay Times, the Bucs and Miller haven't seriously discussed a future contract for the former third-round pick.

Free agency does not begin until March 12, so there is still a month ahead to re-sign the 25-year-old Miller. However, the lack of negotiations, or even talks at all, seems rather telling about his chances of playing in Tampa for 2013.

Miller recorded a total of 24 tackles in 2012. Defensive tackles, though, don’t usually boast impressive stat lines. Miller helped the Bucs finish with the No. 1 run defense in the league, allowing just 82.5 yards per game and a 3.5 yard per carry average to opposing backs.

Defensive coordinator Bill Sheridan liked what he saw from Miller this past season.

“I think Roy has had a very good year. He’s been very disruptive. He’s a guy a lot of times you need to put two blockers on or else he’s got a chance to really knock the center back and get in the backfield.”

Miller doesn’t play on third downs or in passing situations. If his asking price is too high, the Bucs may be content with letting him walk.
