Eagles re-sign Michael Vick to 1-year contract

Michael Vick will suit up for the Eagles in 2013. Here’s the latest on his situation in Philadelphia.

Jim McIsaac

The Philadelphia Eagles made a splash on Monday by re-signing quarterback Michael Vick to a one-year deal, per the team's official website. Questions surrounded Vick's future in Philadelphia heading into the offseason, but the Eagles are willing to give him one more chance to prove himself.

Vick’s new deal is actually a restructured contract. He was due to cost the Eagles $15.5 million this year, a sizable cap hit for a team doing some minor rebuilding under a new head coach. His new deal is technically for three seasons, but has an easy out for the team after 2013. The last two years of the deal void on March 15. Jason LaCanfora notes that the deal is worth up to $10 million this year.

With Chip Kelly in charge, Vick will compete for the starting job along with Nick Foles. After watching Kelly’s team at Oregon for years, it’s easy to see why he would want Vick to stay around. Vick’s mobility will transfer well to the scheme that made Kelly famous with the Ducks.

Re-signing Vick has far-reaching implications for the Eagles and the NFL. He fits better in Kelly’s offense than Nick Foles, whose future in Philadelphia looks a little cloudy, at best, now. It also means teams thinking that Vick could have been a fill-in solution for 2013 will have to look elsewhere.

The up-tempo style of play Kelly likes should suit Vick. Can he stay healthy, though? Can he lead the Eagles to success? We’ll see how it plays out going forward. He’ll have one last shot.
