Cardinals expected to address Kevin Kolb’s contract

With Kevin Kolb scheduled to make $11 million next season, but he will likely have to renegotiate his deal to remain in Arizona.

If Kevin Kolb wants another shot to be the starting quarterback of the Arizona Cardinals he will likely have to take a big pay cut. Kolb is due $11 million next season and team president Michael Bidwill said, "Kevin's contract is probably something we're going to need to address."

In an appearance on Arizona Sports 620, Bidwill went on to say of Kolb’s contract, “it’s a big number and given the productivity and the questions about durability and everything, that’s something that I think the reality is we need to sit down and discuss.”

Kolb has only played in 15 games in two seasons since coming to Arizona to be their starter. Last season he put up decent numbers before an injury knocked him out for the season. In six games (one he didn't start and another he didn't finish), Kolb threw for 1,169 yards, eight touchdowns and three interceptions. The Cardinals got off to a 4-0 start in 2012, but then lost 11 of their last 12 games behind Kolb, John Skelton, Ryan Lindley, and Brian Hoyer.

If Bidwil and the Cardinals are able to renegotiate Kolb’s contract to a more reasonable figure there is still no guarantee that he would be the starter next season. Bidwill said that decision is up to the coaches. “They’re all going to take a look at the quarterbacks that we have and really look at the tape,” he said. Bidwill indicated that they would discuss free agent options at quarterback as well, but the process would start with looking and the quarterbacks currently on the roster.
