Dallas Cowboys executive Stephen Jones, son of owner Jerry Jones, has said the team seeks a contract extension for quarterback Tony Romo. Jones reaffirmed the franchise's long-term commitment to Romo this week, stating that the organization may try to get an extension done before Romo's contract expires. He's entering the final year of that deal, and is set to make $11.5 million next season.

But from what it sounds like, Jones and his dad will work to have a new extended and restructured contract in place over the next month, via Calvin Watkins of ESPNDallas.com:
“Tony is a key piece of what we’re about going forward,” Jones said Tuesday. “We’re certainly going to be looking at his situation (in) time. We’ve historically (extended contracts) with quarterbacks for the Dallas Cowboys ahead of time. We did it with Troy (Aikman) and we certainly want to look at that with Tony so we can all move forward in terms of how we want to play around our salary cap with our team. Tony is the key piece in terms of how your cap is represented.”
Romo’s current cap hit for next season is a team-high $16.8 million. As Watkins notes, that’s a big portion of a total team salary that is set to be close to $20 million over the cap of $121 million. The deadline for getting under the cap is March 12.
Unsurprisingly, Jones would not get into the specifics on either length or dollar amount of a potential extension, but he did seem optimistic that the franchise and Romo, who he called a “great partner,” could work something out.
Romo has spent all 10 years of his career with the Cowboys, and been the leader of their offense for the past eight seasons. He’s thrown for nearly 26,000 yards in his career, along with 177 touchdowns and 91 interceptions. His career passer rating is 95.6, but any numbers are often overshadowed by discussion of his end-of-season and playoff shortcomings.
