Ray Rice: Cam Cameron firing provided ‘wake-up call’ for Ravens

Ravens running back Ray Rice had nothing but praise for Cam Cameron, but called his firing a “wake-up call” for Baltimore’s offense.

Baltimore Ravens head coach John Harbaugh shocked the NFL world when he fired offensive coordinator Cam Cameron toward the end of the 2012 regular season and replaced him with former Indianapolis Colts head coach Jim Caldwell.

Cameron recently called his own firing a brilliant decision. Ravens running back Ray Rice appeared on NFL AM and had nothing but praise for Cameron, calling his firing a “wake-up call” for the Baltimore offense.

“That’s a bold statement by Cam Cameron,” Rice said on “NFL AM” on Wednesday. “When we had our mishaps, Cam always took it for us. When that change happened, it was a wake-up call. We all felt like, you know what, Cam was the playcaller, but we had to go out there and make the plays.

”It was an attention grabber. But coach (Jim) Caldwell, what he did for us, he kept things simple. He just preached one thing, ‘Let’s do what we do, but let’s do it really well.’

Cameron was fired following Baltimore's Week 14 overtime loss to the Washington Redskins. Baltimore lost two of its last three regular season games with Caldwell as offensive coordinator, but then went a perfect 4-0 in the playoffs, winning Super Bowl XLVII.

In Baltimore’s four playoff games, including the Super Bowl, the Ravens averaged 31 points per game, scoring 34 or more points in two of the contests -- including the Super Bowl.

Cameron was recently hired by Les Miles at Louisiana State to be the Tigers’ new offensive coordinator.
