Raiders likely to give Terrelle Pryor long look as QB, according to report

The Oakland Raiders are prepared to give Terrelle Pryor a chance to compete with Carson Palmer for the starting quarterback position.

With the success of mobile quarterbacks around the league, the Oakland Raiders are going to give Terrelle Pryor a long look as a potential starting quarterback this offseason, according to Silver and Black Pride. Offensive coordinator Greg Olson indicated that Pryor would compete with Carson Palmer for the starting job in Oakland.

An increased interest in Pryor does not indicate that the team is looking to move away from Palmer. Olson said he was excited about Palmer, but the team was also interested to see what Pryor could do. “I know Reggie (McKenzie)‘s made the statement that there will always be competition. I think there has to be competition at every position,” Olson said on Wednesday.

Many have been comparing Pryor to 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick, who proved he could get the job done with both his legs and his arm. Olson praised Kaepernick's abilities and said the Raiders have to find out if Pryor has the same type of skills:

“So that’s what we’ll have to find out with Terrelle Pryor,” Olson said. “We know what kind of an athlete he is. We need to find out what kind of decision maker he is, and we need to find out if he’s a guy that can also sit in the pocket and deliver the ball from point A to point B accurately and on time and making the right decisions. That above all else becomes most important. Can he make good decisions and is he accurate as a passer?”

Pryor started the final game of the 2012 season for the Raiders, going 13-for-28 with 150 yards, two touchdowns and an interception. He also added 49 yards and a touchdown on the ground. Even if Pryor does not get the starting job, it sounds like Olson plans to use him more frequently than the Raiders did last season.

“I just think it’s important that as a coach you’re willing to adapt and be flexible and be able and try to put a player like him, that may be an explosive player, on the field for you,” Olson said.
