Bears offseason: Brian Urlacher’s future in Chicago still undetermined

New Bears coach Marc Trestman had a 30 minute conversation with Brian Urlacher, and while the linebacker indicated he would like to stay in Chicago, Trestman said it was ‘premature’ to discuss his future with the Bears.

The future of Brian Urlacher with the Chicago Bears is still up in the air, but he did speak with new coach Marc Trestman. In a press conference on Thursday, Trestman said that he spoke to Urlacher for 30 to 40 minutes on the phone, but would not indicate if the Bears would resign the popular linebacker.

“There isn’t any question he loves Chicago and this is where he wants to be,” Trestman said. Despite Urlacher’s interest in staying with the Bears, Trestman believes it is “premature” to talk about his future in Chicago. Trestman did indicate that new defensive coordinator Mel Tucker would run a similar defense to what the Bears have run over the past several years, which Urlacher is familiar with.

Urlacher has spent his entire 13-year career with the Bears and is their all-time leading tackler, but will hit free agency in March. The eight-time Pro Bowl selection recorded 68 tackles, two forced fumbles, and one interception returned for a touchdown in 12 games last season. Urlacher will turn 35 prior to the 2013 season and his best days are behind him, but he remains a team leader and fan-favorite in Chicago.
